In her brief time in Georgia, Katelyn Schiavone has already made her mark at UGA, taking on multiple majors and minors and writing about fashion for several UGA publications.
Schiavone grew up in Reading, Pa., an hour outside of Philadelphia. She was drawn to UGA for its strong programs in journalism and fashion merchandising.
She’s now a junior, and plans to graduate in December 2011 -- an impressive feat considering her busy schedule. Schiavone is a double major in consumer journalism and magazines, with minors in Spanish and fashion merchandising.
She said consumer journalism is a major she made herself, combining her magazines major and her fashion merchandising minor. Half of the classes come from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, and half from the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
An Elle magazine reader since she was in fifth grade, Schiavone one day hopes to be the editor of a fashion magazine in New York. In the meantime, she’s worked at several smaller publications.
In high school, she wrote for the teen section of her local newspaper, the Reading Eagle. The teen section, “Voices,” was published once a week.
At UGA, she works as the fashion editor of InfUSion magzine and the editor in chief of Little Red Book, both UGA publications. Her articles have covered topics near and far, from the opening of Blue Girl Boutique in downtown Athens to fashion trends in Russia.
This summer, she interned at a lifestyle magazine, Berks County Living, in her hometown. Some of her articles there profiled unique entrepreneurs, like a mom who started a business out of her home selling gift items and girls’ dresses.
Although Schiavone says she “fell in love with the South” after visiting UGA, she admits she misses one of her favorite foods from home, the buffalo chicken cheesesteak with blue cheese. They’re common at sandwich shops in her hometown, she says, but she’s never had one in Athens.
