Programs for Bilingual Students
This story will include the statistics of students in Athens-Clarke County high schools who speak English as a second language and how they have changed in recent years. It will also discuss the county wide ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages Program) including who qualifies for it, what the program goals are and how it differs in upper and lower level education. I plan to talk to Vicki Krugman, Director of ESOL services, as well as ESOL specialists at CSHS and CCHS (Jodi Bolgala and Carla Horne). I will also talk to teachers/students at Chase Street Elementary to compare students entering the program in elementary school and see how effective it has been by the time students reach high school.
