Story Ideas for Teen Magazine

1. How many high school students from Athens go to UGA? Why do they decide to stay here or go somewhere else?
2. Nuci's Space--I'm pretty sure this is one of the few places in Athens that people under 18 can go to see live music. http://www.nuci.org/
3. Music reviews-- either CDs or live shows. After all, most of them probably listen to the same music we do.
4. Book reviews. What can teens read if they're not interested in Twilight? It could be a list of new teen books and well-known coming-of-age stories.
5. Advice column-- I know this would be hard to do since we're only publishing one issue, but I think it could be a good idea. When I was in high school, it would have been nice to have advice from someone who was a few years older than me, but not a whole generation older.
6. Driving's a pretty big deal when you're in high school, but now Joshua's law says that teens have to take a driver's ed course or wait until 17 to get their license. Probably safer, but annoying to teens. Also, is it an economic issue of paying for driver's ed? I know not all high schools offer it. http://www.dds.ga.gov/news/newsdetail.aspx?id=31
7. Also about driver's licenses: As of last year, driver's licenses and IDs for anyone under 21 are vertically oriented instead of horizontal, to make it harder to make fakes. Maybe not a story in itself, but could be combined with the story above. http://www.dds.ga.gov/FAQs/Index.aspx?FAQCategoryID=33
8. Athens, The Band: It's a band made up of 11- to 15-year-olds. http://flagpole.com/Weekly/Features/Athens-2Dec09
9. Things to do for fun: It's a broad topic, but it could still be interesting. Most high schoolers are under 18, so downtown nightlife is off-limits to them, and I think the Beechwood movie theater doesn't admit anyone under 18 after 8 p.m. What are some more creative options for entertainment?
10. College? Helping teens decide whether or not to go to college, and where. Offer profiles of people a few years older who have chosen either option, talking about the good and bad points of their decision.
11. Healthy relationships: What qualifies as a healthy relationship. Also, resources for helping with relationships, from getting birth control/protection to getting help in an unhealthy relationship.
12. Getting along with parents: How to compromise, how to deal with rules. http://teenadvice.about.com/cs/parentstalkto/ht/parentrelateht.htm
