Student Merges Media with the Great Outdoors

Although she moved to the suburbs of Marietta at age four, Katie Valentine never lost her love for the vast natural world of Vancouver.

Valentine, a junior at the University of Georgia, is a magazine journalism major as well as an ecology minor. She plans to work for a nature magazine one day and pursue her love for the outdoors.

"I've always been really interested in nature and the environment," Valentine said. "So I think it's important to be able to write about something I care about."

In preparation for her journalistic career goals, Valentine works for The Red & Black as a news reporter. She first gained media experience in high school, however, as a member of the yearbook staff.

Valentine was also able to broaden her ecological knowledge this summer while studying in Costa Rica through a University sponsored program. She and a group of students did research on local ecosystems while living on the UGA Costa Rica campus. They also had the opportunity to travel to tropical locations along the coast.

Although she enjoyed her time abroad, Valentine hopes to return to Vancouver after graduating where the beauty of the outdoors far surpasses the scenery of suburban Atlanta.
